Did you wake up Christmas morning and welcome a new puppy to your home? What an amazing gift to receive. I am sure your new puppy is as cute as can be, I thought mine was, until I began to clean up after him. The honeymoon may be coming to an end and now the reality of your new responsibility is setting in. How do I potty train him? How do I know when he has to go outside? How long can he be alone before he goes potty inside the house? What do I do if I can't be home for long periods of time, will that hinder his progress? I didn't know all these answers right away, however, I did know that these questions required attention.
To be honest, I did know the answer. I knew that a dog door was the answer. My Father owns the company that manufactures the first ever dog door that seals airtight and is the first dog door to be endorsed by Energy Star partners because of its energy saving ability. I intentionally waited several months after adopting my Lab to install a dog door into my home to identify potential problems that you may encounter and to better relate to dog owners in general.
Potty training my dog was simple, read this for instructions. He knew to go to the bathroom outside, yet he often messed in the house. He messed in the house because I didn't know when to let him out and often I remembered to let him out to late. I knew he was disappointing in himself and I knew I was to blame. I definitely needed some training myself, but I wasn't interested in being the doorman for my dog.
I often came home to messes in the kitchen where I kept him while I was at appointments or at work. Again, not entirely his fault because sometimes I must be away for hours at a time. Unfortunately, I don't work full time from home, yet, and I don't think owning a puppy will be enough leverage to earn that right. If it did I am sure we would all have many puppies.
In order to be fair to my puppy in his efforts to be a happy and confident potty trained companion he needed a tool that would allow him access to the outdoors when I either wasn't home or home and too busy to notice that he had to go outside. Like I said, I was failing doorman training miserably.
I already mentioned that we manufacture the most energy efficient dog door you can install. If you buy one from us, that is fantastic. But that is not the point of what am writing, the point is that your puppy and you will benefit tremendously and you can solve many potential problems if you give your pet the freedom to come and go as he pleases. To be fair to your dog who wants to be a good dog and go to the bathroom outside install a dog door as soon as possible regardless if it is a dog door we manufacture or not. I promise you will have a dog that is less likely to potty inside and the both of you will be much happier.
