Are you looking for a dog door that works well in the cold weather. Do you live in Canada or the the Midwest and need a pet door that can withstand extreme temperatures and stop the cold drafts from coming inside? Do you currently own a dog door with a plastic flap that curls up when the temperature drops below freezing? My Dad installed a pet door 3 years ago and the pet flap warped allowing massive amounts of cold air into the home. To add insult to the problem the dogs began chewing the warped flap. What a mess!
If this sounds familiar or you want to prevent this from happening here are some tips when deciding to buy and install a dog door in a cold weather climate.
- Do not install a pet door with a plastic flap because it will warp, curl, and or crack
- Do not install a dog door with aluminum or metal parts because metal acts as a conductor of cold
- Choose a dog door made only of energy efficient materials
- Choose a dog door with a pet flap that seals and allows zero air infiltration
- Choose a dog door with a pet flap that provides a good thermal barrier
- If possible install the dog door on the side of the house that receives the least amount of wind
Hopefully these tips help you choose a dog door that will work best for you in your cold climate.
